When it comes to saving the environment, these Bollywood celebrities believe in working for the cause, and not necessarily for the applause. From harvesting rainwater to building India's first elephant village, they have been quietly contributing to make the world a better, cleaner and greener place.
We are remembering the work of these celebrities on World Environment Day because their efforts extend beyond smiling for the cameras or posing for campaigns. Let's take a leaf from their book.

John Abraham's poster for PETA, where he's seen freeing birds, has garnered a lot of attention. But the actor has done a lot more for the environment than he lets on: Through Garnier, the cosmetic brand he endorses, John associated himself with the ‘PowerLight A Village’ campaign, an initiative to provide solar powered electricity to villages. And who can forget about John setting up India's first elephant village in Maharashtra. "It is not the first time that I have stood up for the cause of animals. I have acted similarly in the case of monkeys, stray dogs and bears. It is sad to see majestic elephants begging on the road," he said in 2008.

A couple of years ago, actor Gul Panag formulated a "green home" with her husband in Mulshi by effectively employing water harvesting and solar power energy instead of exhaustive resources. Gul has launched her own foundation, The Col. Shamsher Singh Foundation, which addresses basic sanitation, waste disposal and effective employment of natural energy resources.

Actor Rahul Bose has consistently worked to raise the profile of climate change in India and overseas. In 2009, Rahul, who represented Oxfam at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, joined tens of thousands of demonstrators at a mass rally and candlelight vigil outside the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen. In 2011, Bose and Priyanka Chopra were involved in a joint program of the United Nations Environment Program and the International Indian Film Academy. Priyanka pledged to plant one tree for every activity registered in her name, while Rahul raised the stakes by pledging to plant two trees for every activity registered in his name.

Actress and activist Nandita Das has become the face of the campaign against fairness products in India. But she has also been an environmentalist. And we remember her for spearheading the water literacy movement in 2003. She collaborated with the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment to produce 90-second service films on rainwater harvesting.

In 2012, he won a Green Globe award for his efforts in fighting climate change. "I believe the youth of our country is very powerful and sure about things it has to do. It is them who can bring about a major difference in tackling these climates issues," hesaid.
