A vacationing Texas teen's selfie stick saved her life after a riptide dragged her underwater, ABC reports.

The drama began when Derrick Johns, his wife, and daughter Erynn, 16, were swimming off Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Tuesday. An unexpected rip current pulled them underwater as Erynn valiantly clutched her selfie stick.

"I inhaled a lot of water at that point and I just I couldn't breathe under there," Erynn told an ABC affiliate. Her father grabbed the other end of the selfie stick to keep her head above the water. She made it to shore and volunteers rescued her parents from the waves.

The dangers of selfies led Russia to issue a selfie safety public service announcementthis week. But it seems the narcissistic devices aren't all bad.
