Supreme Court: Unwed Mother Can Be The Sole Legal Guardian Without Father's Consent

NEW DELHI -- In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has said that an unwed mother in India can become the sole legal guardian of a child without the consent of the father.

The bench led by Justice Vikramjit Sen overrides existing Indian laws which require a woman to take a man's permission before applying for guardianship.

Ranjana Kumari, a women's rights activist and director of the Delhi-based Centre for Social Research think tank, described it as a "progressive stand."

The plaintiff, a government official, approached the Supreme Court in 2011 after a trial court and the Delhi High Court ruled that she needed to disclose the father's name to get his consent while filing a guardianship petition.

Billionaire Saudi Prince Pledges To Donate $32 Billion To Charity

Saudi Arabia's billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the world's richest people, announced Wednesday that he will donate all of his wealth of $32 billion to charity over the coming years.

The money will go to the Saudi prince's organisation called Alwaleed Philanthropies to work in the fields of "intercultural understanding" and supporting communities in need, he said in a statement. Programs will include promoting health, eradicating disease, bringing electricity to remote villages, building orphanages and schools, as well as "empowering women."

The prince, chairman of investment firm Kingdom Holding Company, said he has already donated $3.5 billion to the charitable organisation.

BERLIN — A robot has killed a contractor at one of Volkswagen's production plants in Germany, the automaker said Wednesday.

The man died Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said.

Military Plane Crashes Into Indonesia Hotel In Residential Area, 30 Killed

An Indonesian military transport plane crashed into a hotel and residential area in the northern Sumatra city of Medan on Tuesday, June 30, killing at least 30 people, a national search and rescue agency official said.

"That's the latest information, the number could go up," Hisar Turnip of the Basarnas agency toldReuters.

Military spokesman Fuad Basya said that 12 personnel, including the pilot, had been aboard the C-130 Hercules. The bodies of five of them have been found.

WATCH: CCTV Captures Incredible Moment A Local Train Crashes Into A Mumbai Platform

A local train crashed into the dead end of a platform at the Churchgate station in Mumbai, injuring five passengers and disrupting the suburban train services on the Western Railway line. Following the incident, the Western Railway (WR) has launched an inquiry and suspended the motorman of the local, its guard and loco inspector.

The speeding train, coming from Bhayander, rammed into the dead end on platform number 3 of Churchgate station at about 11.20 AM, as the motorman failed to stop the train in time. As a result, its first coach jumped onto the south-end concourse of the platform. Due to the impact, the wheels of the first coach were seen hanging in the air, ripping apart all the technical equipment in its lower part and also the overhead wire on upper side.

A CCTV captured the exact moment the accident happened.
